Tanks are manufactured following several relevant standards, such as European EN-12285 (Workshop fabricated steel tanks. Horizontal cylindrical single skin and double skin tanks for the aboveground storage of flammable and non-flammable water polluting liquids), DVS (German Welding Institute) 2205, and ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), which give advice on wall thickness, quality control procedures, testing procedures, accreditation, fabrication and design criteria of final product.

Underground tanks are supplied, double skinned with composite overwrapping: the metal tank (carbon or stainless steel) is jacketed with filament windings like glass fiber/aramid or carbon fiber or with a plastic compound around the metal cylinder, mainly for corrosion protection (cathodic protection).

The USTs and ASTs are also equipped of overfill protection (to prevent overfills of the tank during tank filling operations), spill containment (to catch spills when filling), and leak detection for both the tank and piping.
